How do you view life?
Imagine a glass of water, but it is not full-filled.
Would you see that the glass is half-full or half-empty?
Some might see it as half-empty and others might as well see it vice-versa.
"Is the glass half empty or half full?"
This phrase/idiom is a common expression to determine one's point of view and the way he perceives things. Everyone thinks differently from each other and there are always two types of thinking.
Pessismism and Optimism.
People who see the glass as half-empty can be pessimistic (negative) while people who see it half-full is optimistic, which is positive.
Expectations in "Half Full"
Few drinks are expected to take up half of the glass. If one is expecting a normal drink, one is expecting a full drink. If one sees the drink at half capacity and declares it to be half full, they are making the implicit admission that it is half more than what they expected or are currently imagining. In other words, half full is only half full when compared to a glass that is completely empty. This "completely empty" alternative is what one has in mind when they declare a drink to be half full.
Expectations in "Half Empty"
One who sees a glass at half capacity to be half empty is expecting a drink filled to normal, full capacity. The deviation from their expectation is that the glass has less than what they expected, or are currently imagining. In other words, the glass is half empty only when compared to a glass that is full. The "full" alternative is what one has in mind when they declare a glass to be half empty.Optimistic or Pessimistic?The popular understanding of the half full or half empty question is that the person who claims that the glass is half full is appreciating the fact that they are in possession of half a glass, whereas the person who claims the drink is half empty is bemoaning the fact that they have less than a full glass. Therefore, the person who claims the glass is half full is dubbed optimistic, whereas the person who claims the glass is half empty is dubbed pessimistic.
Seriously, I'm a great loser. Anyone who follows my blog should already know that I have low self-esteem and confidence. I sometimes see it half-empty because of my negative thinking.
Nevertheless, I think I'm both. Sometimes I figure that there is still half-full water in the glass. My mind keep telling me that after something bad happened, there will be another hope of bright future. It is like, after I had thought of the worst thing, I eventually ended up thinking of the best thing that could happen in my situation.

I keep asking myself why can't I be beautiful and pretty like other people? Why is that? I always find myself as an ugly duckling which would never be the beautiful swan. Then, the other side of me answer the question;
"That is because I am special and has the knowledge. Good looks is just a distraction from knowing the real myself"
I realize that I don't have to be a beautiful swan just like everybody else. All I need is to stop being the ugly duckling because you become what do you think you are. Think positive and be optimistic is what I really need to do and the optimism that I instill in my mind, shall remain still.

Thought to ponder, if you keep seeing the glass as half-empty, in the long run, you'll always become the weak ugly duckling.
Footnote: Everyday I tell myself that I'm beautiful, and pretty, and somewhat with brain. A beautiful swan might be beautiful but it shows no signs of brilliant brain.
